Jainism as Social and Visual Practice: Anthropological Perspective contains Marcus Banks’s ethnographic writings on Jainism, posthumously gathered in a single volume. The writings are concerned with two major issues: first, the social organization of Jains in India and in England; and second, visual representation among Jains. To this day, there remains a dearth of good anthropological studies of the lay Jain community. This book will significantly supplement existing scholarship in the field. That Banks conducted research both in India and the United Kingdom is a unique feature in the scant anthropological literature on the Jains. The Author
Marcus Banks (1960–2020) was Professor of Visual Anthropology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Wolfson College. He was Head of the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography (SAME) between 2012 and 2016. His major publications include Organizing Jainism in India and England, Rethinking Visual Anthropology (co-edited with Howard Morphy), and Visual Methods in Social Research.
The Editors
John E. Cort is Professor Emeritus of Religion at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. His research has centered on religion, culture, history, literature and visual culture of western India, with a special focus on the Jains.
David Zeitlyn is Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Wolfson College. He has been working with Mambila in Cameroon since 1985, on various topics including traditional religion, sociolinguistics, kinship, history, and photography. He is co-author of Visual Methods in Social Research (2nd edition) with Marcus Banks.
Chihab El Khachab is Associate Professor in Visual Anthropology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Wolfson College. He is the author of Making Film in Egypt: How Labor, Technology, and Mediation Shape the Industry (American University in Cairo Press, 2021).
