Royals, Servants, and Peasants presents a collection of seven essays on the socio-economic and political aspects of the medieval states (Amber-Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, and the Braj region) now located in present-day Rajasthan.

The focus of the book includes the zamindari class, peasant revolts, issues of political legitimacy, agrarian crises, and the rise of regional kingdoms. The research presented here is significant and largely based on village-level revenue records (such as arsatthas, dastur amals, arzdashts, taqsim dahsalas, and Amber records) and a variety of contemporary reports, found at the Rajasthan State Archives, Bikaner. Through an intense study of such primary sources, this volume provides information about crucial aspects of the agrarian economy and political sphere of Rajasthan, thus reminding us that the ‘region’ is where the most profound historical processes are often most visible.
